Don't be too pessimistic. As long as you have a copy of your deposit/ advance rental then the landlord is obliged to return your deposit. Lack of contract is not a reason for refusing to honor the lease agreement because there is a de facto lease already ( meaning, lessor has received the rental and has acknowledged the existence of the lease ).
Even without a renewal, if the lessor continues to accept your rentals and you continue to stay in the premises, then there is a tacit renewal of the lease agreement ( terms will be based on the old contract ).

不要太悲观了。只要你手上有付定金的收据或凭证,副本就行。则房东就有义务退还押金给你。契约的缺失不是拒绝履行租赁协议的理由,因为一个实际上的租赁关系是存在的(意思是出租人已收到租金,并已承认接受租客的存在)。
即使没有更新,如果出租人继续接受你的租金而你继续留在该住处,那么这里就是一个默认续约的关系。(条款根据先前制订的合同不变)。
